Plagiarism

Plagiarism

  • According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to plagiarize means to :
    • Steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own: use (another’s production) without crediting the source
    •  Commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
  • Plagiarism is stealing. Thus, it is not tolerated in the academic institutions and in the workplaces.

How to avoid plagiarism

  • By properly identifying borrowed words and ideas in your text.
  • For quotations of less than 40 words, make sure to identify the words of another author by using quotation marks in your text, along with proper citation afterward.
  • For quotations of 40 words or more, you need to indent the paragraph with no quotation marks.  We identify the text as a block quote by using the paragraph indent
  • Paraphrasing should be identified in-text
    • I am not quoting here, I am paraphrasing the ideas of another person (Author, 2015, p. 20)
    • Author (2015) mentions that paraphrasing should be identified in-text ( p. 20)
  •  Sources should always be cited in your References section

Copyright Infringement

  • Using a work without the author’s permission.
