https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/global-culture/identity-body/identity-body-united- states/a/louise-bourgeois-cumul-i (Links to an external site.)

and read http://www.cheimread.com/artists/louise-bourgeois (Links to an external site.)

View this video about Brancusi’s work The Kiss: https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ap-art-history/later-europe-and-americas/modernity-ap/v/btheki (Links to an external site.)

and read this article: https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-constantin-brancusi-brazenly-redefined-sculpture (Links to an external site.)

  • Do you feel that these artists’ abstractions are more powerful than straightforward depictions of the male and female body?
  • Make sure to discuss both artists and refer to specific works by each artist (Bourgeois and Brancusi) in your post. You must use the examples provided in the text and you may additionally use images in the links for each artist.

Research Project3–Discussion Post II Answer

Portrayals of the male and female body have different representations which the artist mainly provide a glimpse of their reflection of it as well as the beliefs and narratives which inspired or influenced them to present the body form in such a way. Tradition, mythologies, and history are some factors that inhibit the artist’s way of representing the male and the female body, and such forms show what beliefs they have had – through cultural affiliation – about the human body. A primary example of this is the relevance of social standards and mythology in the representation of male and female forms.
