Writing Arguments
- In paragraph 16, Orwell concedes, “Look back through this essay, and for certain you will find that I have again and again committed the very faults I am protesting against.” Find three examples of these “faults” in Orwell’s prose. Then, write a paragraph for each “fault,” explaining why it meets his standard for “bad” writing.
Writing Argument 2 Answer
- One fault found in the essay is from paragraph 1, where he used the term “sentimental archaism.”
This is a bad form of writing according to Orwell’s standards because it uses highfaluting words to describe something that can be easily described and defined through simple worlds. He could have used “old-fashioned” to make the sentence simpler to understand because it is a common word and a layman’s term rather than “archaism.”
