Once you’ve collected and read your sources (5 at minimum), you are ready to begin composing your Annotated Bibliography. An Annotated Bibliography provides a snapshot of your research by offering a list of sources you have collected, alongside a brief paragraph-long commentary (i.e., annotation) on each source. The annotation you provide on each source should address the following:
- Summarizethe source (2–4 sentences)
- What is the piece’s primary claim?
- What sort of evidence and analysis is employed?
- Assessthe source (1–2 sentences)
- Does it persuade you as a reader? Why or why not?
- What subject does the source consider?
- Where and by whom is this piece published?
- Who is the intended audience of this piece?
- What can I determine about the author’s ethos?
- What assumptions are being made?
- Reflectupon the source’s relevance to your paper (1–2 sentences)
- How will the source help you prove your thesis? What aspects of the source will be most useful to you in your argument? Why? What parts do you plan to use? Where do you plan to use them in your argument?
- How does this source compare with your other sources? Do they complement one another? Reach different conclusions?
- Conclude your annotation with a clear statement of how this source helped you refine your research paper.
