1. Identify general and specific goals for a given speaking situation.
2. Create an effective introduction and conclusion for a presentation, following the guidelines in this chapter.

• cause–effect pattern – a logical system that organizes evidence to show how something happened.
• chronological pattern – organizes information according to the sequence of time.
• Claim – an assertion of the truth of something, typically one that is disputed or in doubt.
• comparative advantages pattern – summarizes the problem briefly, compare different solutions to find the one that solves the most aspects of the problem, and ask the audience to accept and implement the most advantageous solution.
