Congress Essay Answer

Explain the factors that make it difficult to oust incumbents.

Your Answer:

Incumbents always enjoy certain advantages in elections. First is the name recall. Voters know more an incumbent than a challenger and the advantage of name recall also benefits relatives of a known official. Second, donors are more likely to give support to a candidate with a better chance of winning and this is usually the incumbent. With more campaign funds, it would be easier for an incumbent to introduce or re-introduce himself to the public and even conduct a negative advertising against the challenger.
