Chapter 10 Small Assignment
Chapter 10 Small Assignment
Option 1
Write a list of questions that you might want to ask a marriage and family therapist (or any therapist that has experience helping people with relationship problems). The questions can be about sexuality in adulthood but they do not need to be limited to that topic; they could include questions about career advice, therapeutic techniques, common issues in marital relationships, or anything else that is relevant to this class or the profession of marriage and family therapy. Once you have written you list, find a therapist (or a student who is in a therapy program) who is willing to be interviewed, and conduct an interview with them (zoom or telephone is preferred, but email will be accepted if it is the only option). Write a short essay that summarizes what you learned from the interview (1 point) and discusses any reflections (thoughts, ideas, additional questions) that you have now that the interview is over (1 point). There are several places you can locate marriage and family therapists (or MFT students) for this potential interview (see below). Also, if you would like to work on this assignment COLLABORATIVELY (with one other student), please let me know IN ADVANCE and we can talk about some ground rules. (1 point will be given for proper formatting and academic writing, including page length and proper grammar).
- Nearby schools that have MFT programs, such as Cal State Long Beach(http://www.ced.csulb.edu/mft (Links to an external site.)) and Cal State Fullerton (http://hhd.fullerton.edu/counsel/ (Links to an external site.))
- The Career Center may be able to help you find local therapist in the area (i.e., UCI alum who are now therapist and who would be open to talking to a current UCI student)
- The UCI Counseling Center(counseling.uci.eduLinks to an external site.)
- Therapy search engines, such as Psychology Today(http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/prof_results.php (Links to an external site.)) and FindaTherapist.com (http://therapists.find-a-therapist.com/DirectoryZIPRadius/Marriage-Counselor/92617-50.aspx (Links to an external site.))
- If you have tried all of the above options and are still having trouble, please send me an email – I do have some friends and former students who are therapists, and I may be able to help get you in touch with them
Option 2
Watch the movie “Sperm Donor X” (which can be watched streaming from the UCI Library website – which will only work when you are connected on an on-campus computer, UCI wifi, or the VPN software: https://uci.kanopy.com/video/sperm-donor-x-differnet-conception (Links to an external site.) ) then write a brief essay in which you briefly summarize what you learned from the documentary (0.75 points) and in which you share your own reflections (thoughts, comments, and questions) related to this documentary. In your reflection, include a discussion of how concepts from this film are related to concepts from Chapter 10 (especially the “Sex and the Single Person” section). (0.75 points). In this assignment, there should be more reflection than summary (0.75 points). (0.75 points will be given for proper formatting and academic writing, including page length and proper grammar). TIP: Want to watch this film at home (and don’t live in campus housing)? You can download the VPN software here: https://www.oit.uci.edu/help/vpn/?target=software-vpnLinks to an external site. – it is free and easy to download. If you have trouble, please let me know.
