Please make sure to read Chapter Eleven on Congress in your “AG” textbook before responding to the below question prompts.
- What are the pro’s and con’s that you see with descriptive representation? Especially from a (racial) minority perspective does it not make sense to want a representative that has had the experiences you’ve had? Or is it problematic to think this way? Answer in at least 200 words.
- You hear on the news these days a lot of criticism against “career” politicians. A “career” politician is a representative who continually wins reelection to their office due in part to the name recognition they generate with their constituents from one term to the next. So is this good or bad for democracy? Answer in at least 200 words.
- Now also respond to at least two of your peers. Each response should be at least 100 words.
Descriptive representation is the belief that the person to be elected as representative should be the one who mirrors the attributes, experiences struggles and conditions of the represented (Krutz & Waskiewicz, 2019). It is believed that this will ensure that the elected representative will represent the true voices of the constituency.
