We learned early this semester that gender is a social construct. Since it is a social construct, it means that gender roles can and do change. As we move forward in this course we are going to see how women’s traditional roles change. Sometimes the change is slow and sometimes certain events accelerate change. The American Revolution is a period in American history when women’s roles change and expand.

**GUIDANCE**
Treat these asynchronous discussions as you would treat an in-person discussion with your classmates. The purpose of these discussions, is to use critical thinking and to exchange ideas with your classmates. You should reference this week’s material and give specific detail in a way that fosters a productive discussion. This is also a good opportunity to ask your classmates questions regarding things you didn’t fully understand. It’s also a good opportunity to help your classmates if you understood something that they did not. You should not treat this as an essay and please use your own words and ideas on the material rather than simply restating the content. Your peers read the same text as you, so it’s not effective to give a full summary of the reading in your initial post.
In the American Revolution, women were allowed to participate in more political affairs. This paved the way for women to be treated, at the very least, with more recognition of their beliefs. During this period, women were able to contribute because of the growing need for labor during the war. For instance, women of farmers had to take over and carry their duties for them in case they were called for.
