A good night’s sleep can be immensely helpful for the human body because of how it replenishes the body. Consequently, being deprived of this sleep is harmful because of the impact. Sleep is considered a physiological need of the body alongside food and water (Hales, 2021, p. 27). In other words, sleep deprivation naturally affects one’s health. In the lecture, it was discussed that sleep deprivation increases the likelihood that someone gets into an accident. In work and school settings, a sleepdeprived person will make more mistakes. They also cannot socialize as well as others. These effects emphasize the importance of sleep. Having sufficient sleep can have a positive impact on both one’s mental and physical well-being (Hales, 2021, p. 33). In opposition, sleep deprivation can create more fatigue. More than getting into accidents, it increases the risk of acquiring chronic diseases and other illnesses. This is because the body is not allowed to repair itself. Additionally, it was found that “sleep deprivation alters immune function” (Hales, 2021, p. 37). This means that the body can no longer protect itself, adding to the listed vulnerabilities above.
