In October 1997, the State of Oregon passed a very controversial bill (Oregon Health Authority, 2020). This went down to history as Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. This law gives terminally ill Oregonian’s the right to choose death through a voluntary self-administration of lethal medication. Lawmakers intended to provide every terminally ill Oregonian with a six-month-to-live prognosis the option to end their life to avoid suffering and maintain control and autonomy, arguing that this helps retain the patient’s dignity. It is not unbeknown to many that in many cases, a terminal diagnosis can involve excruciating pain and total dependence on another person due to the loss of ability to care for oneself. Thus, for someone who used to be at the prime of their life and very independent, a terminal illness strips them of their dignity. On top of this, the patient’s complete and total dependence may bring them to lose their dignity because they begin to consider themselves a burden to the people they love.
