Essay on Bastard Out of Carolina

Instructions
In preparation for this assignment watch the film “Bastard Out of Carolina” (1996) directed by Anjelica Huston.
You also should have completed reading the book and will need it to answer some of the questions.
Prepare substantive responses to each of the following questions. Please respond to each question in a bulleted format:

Bastard Out of Carolina (Film)
 How has the film shaped your ideas about the therapeutic treatment of cases involving sexual abuse and/or trauma? How do the ideas presented in the text confirm/challenge societal views of sexual abuse and/or trauma? What is your understanding of sexual abuse and/or trauma, what are your personal experiences that shape your ideas?
 Describe how you would work with Bone if she came to see you in a clinical setting at the age of 17.
Would you view her as a victim? Would you view her as a survivor? Based on your epistemology and therapeutic perspective explain what techniques you would incorporate in therapy.
 How would you work with Bone’s mother if she came to see you as an individual client? What would a family session look like?
 Describe how you would approach Bone, if Bone, in fact was a male client? Would you view him differently? Would this change your approach to therapy? Does gender of the therapist or client matter when working with individuals who have been sexually abused?

Bastard Out of Carolina (Book)
 What did you see as the major difference between Bastard out of Carolina (book) and Bastard out of Carolina (film). Would any of these differences change how you might approach working with Bone as a client?
 On the bottom of page 45 through the end of page 47, what did you read and how did you feel when reading the material. As a therapist what types of issues might a client deal with after an experience such as what was depicted in these pages?
 On pages 104-116 what did you noticed about the main character? What types of issues might the main character be dealing with. How might you work with a client experiencing similar things?
 How would you work with Bone’s step-father (Glen) if he came to see you as an individual client, and he was the person seeking treatment? What types of questions would you ask? Would you feel comfortable working with him? If not, what would you do to address your discomfort?

The assignment should follow a bulleted format, not an essay format; however, each response should be written in strict adherence with APA conventions, with the one exception being that you can respond to the questions in the first person.

Excerpt

The film depicts how sexual abuse and traumatic events must be addressed immediately to prevent future effects on the victim. The film provides valuable insight on the need for immediate response when abuse has been witnessed or occurred. It made me realize the importance of therapeutic responses to address recurring and future problems. Also, to lessen the severity of the actions that have been done.
