Medical professionals view health as more than the absence of the disease but gears more towards the overall wellbeing among biological, psychological, and social issues. This is a holistic view on health which are applicable among all individuals and patients especially among the elderly. Older adults may require a lot of needs not just on medications but also on non-pharmacologic interventions because they are prone to a lot of complications and problems. Among the geriatric population, this need for holistic treatment is much more apparent to those who are living in continuing-care retirement homes or communities as they usually have medical conditions that require support for daily living. They also live away from their families which may contribute to their overall management and treatment response. In this paper, the concept of assisted living particularly in a continuing-care retirement community will be discussed. Various concepts on holistic care for the geriatric population will be covered. Afterwards, a patient case will be presented where the concepts of assisted living and care for the geriatric population will be applied. These ideas will highlight the importance of assisted living and of providing holistic care and management for elderly patients who are in continuing-care retirement communities.
