To answer some of the questions you may need to read the play first, I will attach that for you.
Okay so here are the instructions:
After watching the film of Uncle Vanya on Digital Theatre, write a 2 page paper about the
production. This paper should be a critical review of the production. This means that you are
looking at the various creative decisions made by the production team and assessing them. This
is NOT a summary of the play. Look at things like set, lighting, acting, costumes. Do they fit the
idea of the play that you had after reading it? Did any of these choices surprise you? Did any of
the choices not work? What did you enjoy and why? What did you not enjoy and why? Think
like a theatre critic!
Uncle Vanya is an extraordinary shift from the theater stage to the screen. The 2020 play Uncle Vanya was directed by Ian Rickson which is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. The actors did well, and the direction was impressive. Their emotions are strong and the connection to the viewer was intense. The adaptation has not ideally captured the original play but the reinterpretation of the text was good. The intensity of the production has captured the new shadows from its release because it was filmed during the pandemic. The crumbling design of the stage can be interpreted with the atmosphere of the COVID-19 situation. However, some interpretations are quite different from the original play. For instance, the added exposition towards ideology and modern concern. In the original play, the mother of Vanya never complains about the lack of agency about her disposition. The mother of Vanya regards herself to be fulfilling her goal to uplift women’s rights. She has admirations for the work of the professor but does not subordinate her work to his needs which is quite the opposite in this newer interpretation.
