Leadership skills are essential for Advanced Practice Nurses, regardless of practice setting. It is not unusual to confuse leadership and management skills. Integrating an awareness of skills unique to leadership (not management) and personality type can help to guide actions leading to personal growth as a leader.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide advanced practice nursing students with the opportunity to assess their personal leadership skills, perceived leadership ability, and personality type. It is hoped that in completing this assignment, you will gain insight into your current ability in order to leverage it in clinical practice.

Review all relevant course material, complete the Jung Typology and Grossman and Valiga Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessments (Typology link available in detailed instructions below; Leadership Assessment is in Module 1) before beginning this assignment. Use the findings to write a paper summarizing your results, not to exceed a strict three (3) page maximum. The page count does not included the title page or reference pages. Papers over the page limit will not be accepted and must be resubmitted with a penalty of 10%. Please review the detailed instructions for specifics regarding the assignment. The rubric below will be used for grading criterion. This assignment is worth 100 points and constitutes 10% of the grade for this course.

A Turnitin Check must be done on all papers in this course prior to submission to the assignment link. This paper must be submitted to the designated Turnitin Check: Leadership Analysis, Role, Nursing Theory, & Self Reflection assignment to screen for plagiarism. Turnitin scores must be under 25% in order for the paper to be eligible for submission. Papers with Turnitin scores over this limit are to be reviewed, revised and resubmitted to the Turnitin Check link. The final Turnitin score is to be recorded in the “add a comment” section when the final paper is submitted. Papers not submitted to Turnitin prior to submission will not be graded until submitted to the Turnitin Check for a score prior to and a 5% penalty will be applied to the final grade for the paper.

These are highly specialized areas of nursing that need a high level of knowledge and expertise. Nursing leadership and nurse management are quite different positions despite these and other similarities. A nurse manager and a nursing leader’s responsibilities, credentials, and tasks differ. Nursing leadership is the art and science of improving nursing outcomes. Nurse leaders must inspire and motivate their staff to develop high-quality procedures and patient care practices. Nurse management teaches teams and nursing divisions to follow set standards and procedures while caring for patients. Nurse managers supervise and train nursing personnel to ensure the efficacy of patient medical care programs.
