Essay on Gorilla, My Love
Instructions
For the reading this week, the author speaks from the perspective of a child. Although the child is thought of as a “child” her words are very adult-like; she speaks her mind whenever given the chance. For your response, this week, focus on the differences between what Hazel says and what you think the adults hear. How does this differ and if you were speaking with her, what would you say to her? Be sure to include specifics from the reading to support your ideas.
Excerpt
The reading entitled “Gorilla, My Love” is in a way bizarre but at the same time extremely mind-stirring. The piece was intricate enough to have to be read by adults but in reality, it really is encompassing of what a child’s desires deep within can be. Hazel’s character, as shown in the latter part, is a young, seemingly naive child with a conviction and sense of command befitting of fully grown woman. She is firm in her beliefs and definitive in the things she wants. However, there seems to be a discrepancy between how she wants herself to be heard and how the people around her perceive her. This is very much dependent on the fact that adults have the tendency to undermine children’s feelings− Hazel is, after all, still young.
