COVID-19 has changed the dynamic in households due to the closure of schools, rising rates of unemployment, and other similar issues. Among those that are mostly affected by the pandemic have been children and adolescents who are confined in their homes. Parents’ parenting styles, therefore, have also been changed and challenged by COVID-19 as they are no longer able to rely on external assistance such as childcare. Especially for children and adolescents under the age of 18 and are in low-income households, the options to assist and improve their mental health are quite scarce. Additionally, their parents may experience more mental distress due to their economic vulnerability, which may aggravate any underlying negative parenting methods. By looking deeper into the parent-child dynamic amid the pandemic, one can decipher how these parenting styles have affected the psychological well-being of the children.
