MULTICULTURAL ART MOVEMENTS (ART 332)RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINESDue in class and in person on April 18! The purpose of the 4-5 page (exclusive of images and bibliography!) research paper is to discuss 3-4 artworks by one multicultural artist in depth ( DISCUSS
1: Arbol de la Esperanza (Tree of Hope), 1946….2:Frida Kahlo, ‘The love embrace of the universe, the Earth (Mexico), Diego, me and Señor Xólotl’, 1949…..3:Frida Kahlo, ‘Masks (Carma I)’, 1946…….4:The Wounded Table, 1940 by Frida Kahlo). The artworks you choose must deal with issues of multiculturalism or be created by an artist belonging to a minority group and be from the time period covered in this class (1910s-present).The focus of your paper should be on a thorough discussion of the artworks and NOT on an artist’s biography or a movement’s history. Important: Your paper must be at least 4-5 full pages of text (exclusive of bibliography and images!), be 1.5 spaced, and using a regular font size (i. e. Times Roman, 12-point font size).Very important: This is a research paper and has to go beyond the material we discussed and read in class. Please focus your paper on artworks we have not already discussed in class and use literature beyond the class readings!Your paper needs to include the following:
1. Title.
2. Brief introduction into your topic/artist.
3. Problem/question(s): It is helpful and will make your paper more interesting if you discuss your artworks with a specific question or thesis in mind, which you would state in your introduction.
4. Artworks: indicate artist(s)’ names, full title, and date of artworks you discuss; (please in italics or underlined in your paper). Please focus on artworks we have not discussed in class!
5. Bibliography: list essays, books, catalogs, or websites in a separate bibliography. Use at least 3 written sources [only one website!], 2 of them need to go beyond class readings. Indicate the use of your sources throughout your paper with footnotes, end notes, or in the main text with parentheses.
6.Attach images of the artworks in form of photocopies or printed images to your paper.
7. Finding a topic: A good way to find a topic is to look through the textbook and the reader. A comparison between two artists or a discussion of a certain issue, a group of artworks by one artist or by a movement are all accepted approaches. Please focus on the artworks, not the artists!
8. A note on plagiarism: Presenting another person’s work as your own, or deliberately failing to credit or attribute the work of others on whom you draw (also if you find it on the Web), is a serious academic offense. So, don’t recycle, don’t cheat yourself, write your own genuine paper and don’t hand in a paper you wrote for another class!
