Not all African Americans agreed with the philosophy of non-violence espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocates of black power called for a more militant approach.  Can militancy make a movement more effective (possibly by making a more moderate approach seem like a reasonable compromise), or is it typically counterproductive?  Either way, why? Be sure to use clear examples that will support your point of view.
