Reference: Barluenga, M., K. N. Stölting, W. Salzburger, M. Muschick, and A. Meyer. 2006. Sympatric speciation in Nicaraguan crater lake cichlid fish. Nature 439:719–723. 

 

From the article, it states that disruptive natural selection may have been the most likely explanation as to why the cichlid species in lake Apoyo evolved into morphologically-different new species with divergent habitat preferences. Analyses of their jaws and stomach content affirm sympatric speciation in this relatively small, isolated, and homogenous habitat. What do you think are the possible factors or influences that have caused this disruptive selection?
