Choose one of the following four discussion prompts from the options below, and then respond to the question(s) within it as your initial post on this forum. If there’s a prompt that you notice hasn’t yet been selected by our peers, I encourage you to consider selecting it, in hopes to enrich our discussion about Social Stratification in the US even further. Be sure to start your response by letting us know which prompt you chose to explore (for example, you can indicate the number, such as #3) and then proceed to respond to all parts of the question you selected. Note that you may choose to post your response as a video or written response.

  1. Why do you think so many people who are not part of the 1 percent are opposed to raising taxes on the wealthiest members of society? How would Marx explain their thinking (recall his concept of “false consciousness”)? Do you agree with Marx? Why or why not?
  2. What is your immediate reaction when you think about the fact that one in four households with children, report an inability to buy enough food? Why? How can more people become informed about this social problem, and take action to alleviate it?
  3. What do you think your life would be like if you worked at a low-wage hourly job for the rest of your life? How would it affect whom you may marry, what kind of family you will have, what kind of home you will live in, what you do for entertainment, and so forth?
  4. How did you social class influence your decision to (a) attend college and (b) attend the particular college in which you are enrolled? How do you expect your studies and/or college degree(s) to affect your social class in the future?

Part II:

What is your “muddiest point” from this module, either from the reading assignment or the related videos? Be sure to include at least one question or general comment about the material, before submitting your initial post. [Note: the “muddiest point” refers to the most difficult or confusing part of the assigned reading and/or related videos].
