Quantities in Chemical Reactions

  • Explain in your own words how a chemical equation is analogous to a cooking recipe.
  • In order to make 16 shortbread cookies, a simple recipe requires 1 cup of butter, 1/2 cup of sugar, and 2 cups of flour. Based on this, how many cups of sugar will be needed to make 100 cookies? Please explain your answer.
  • A chemical equation is written in terms of moles, but our physical world is not measured in moles. In the chemistry lab, we can measure a substance’s mass. What is necessary to relate the measured mass of a substance to the chemical equation it is part of?
