Mythology Wordles and Mythology Chart – Group Three

Question

Dear students,

There are several parts to this Discussion Assignment, so please read carefully, and do this assignment when you have time to “dig in.”

Mythology: What is it? Wordle it!

You have read several myths, and you have begun to think about what mythology is. For this first activity, you will do a short brainstorm, create a “Word Cloud” and take a screenshot of it. Here are step-by-step instructions:

Instructions on Using Word Cloud

You will be creating word clouds using a word cloud generator linked below. If you are new to creating word clouds, you may find these instructions helpful.

  1. Click on Wizard
  2. Click on type or paste text
  3. Type (or paste) your word list. My example is about students!
  4. Click apply!

Creating Key Words about Cultural Theories

Mythology: What is it? Chart it!

What is Mythology? When we talk about myths and folklore what are we referring to? What features can we expect examples of myths and folklore to share? Each of the tales you read for homework is an example of “myth and folklore”. Using that material as a guide, we are going to try and create a working definition of this branch of literature.

Please fill in the columns below as extensively as you can, providing specific examples from the readings to show where and how you saw what you claim. You should aim to fill in at least three rows. You can copy and paste this chart into a Word document, directly into your discussion reply, or you may simplify it and list each column in order, instead of keeping the chart.

Form

(What are the characteristics of mythical stories?)

Function

(What role might these stories play within a culture?)

Potential

((What might stories like these be capable of doing to/for people?)

Example: The stories all contain at least one moral or lesson.

Example: These stories can be used to set moral expectation.

Example: Changing moral behavior.

Posting to Discussion Board

Finally, you are ready to post to the discussion board.

  • You should have a screenshot or PDF of your Wordles to post. You will need to attach (Links to an external site.) that.
  • After you attach it, please write 1-4 sentences about what your Wordle means to you in terms of what you read in the Native American myths, and in terms of thinking about mythology in general.
  • You should have at least three rows of the chart above (so that means at least three “Form,” at least three “Function,” and at least three “Potential.”

Responding to Discussion Board

In our course, we always respond to our peers on the discussion board within 24 hours after the posting due date. Initial posts and response are always welcome early. You may turn them in any time after you have completed the work.

  • Because this discussion is in your small group, please consider responding to all of your peers, but do respond to at least two.
  • Please be sure to use Netiquette in your response.
  • In your response, make at least one insightful comment, and ask at least one question
  • Please circle back and answer the questions that you were asked.
