Heroism Compare and Contrast Discussion
There are several parts to this Discussion Assignment, so please read carefully, and do this assignment when you have time to “dig in.”
Create Two Venn Diagrams
After reading and annotating the four readings: Seeing Through the Illusions of Sports Heorism, Misconceptions About Heroism Today, Philip Zimbardo – What Makes A Hero and Colin Kaepernick is Doing What Heroes Do, you may have some new thoughts about heroism and its value to our culture.
First, create two Venn diagrams.
- Choose two of the articles above in which there is some overlap between the ideas, and create a diagram that compares and contrasts the major ideas in the articles.
- Then, choose the other two articles, and create a diagram that compares and contrasts the major ideas in those articles.

Hero Contemplations
Next, make some notes on the following questions:
- Why should we study the stories of heroes from other times and/or other cultures?
- Is it useful to use the term “hero” in contemporary culture for living people? Why or why not?
Posting to Discussion Board
Finally, you are ready to post to the discussion board.
- You should have a screenshot or PDF of your Venn diagrams to post. You will need to attach that.
- After you attach it, please write 1-4 sentences about what your diagrams mean to you in terms of what you find most relevant about the four different readings’ similarities and differences.
- Write about the two questions that you pondered, above.
Responding to Discussion Board
In our course, we always respond to our peers on the discussion board within 24 hours after the posting due date. Initial posts and response are always welcome early. You may turn them in any time after you have completed the work.
- Please respond to two other students.
- Please be sure to use Netiquette in your response.
- In your response, indicate one interesting compare or contrast from the Venn diagrams and you may either politely challenge a claim or idea from the two questions, or you may acknowledge an interesting insight (or both!).
