In this discussion, you will practice analyzing a consumer product for a popular brand product.  This type of analysis will be relevant to your upcoming Definition essay.  Make note of it; it is the name of your assigned discussion group listed above.

However, before you begin research on that product, let’s practice creating a consumer image with the following sample ads:

Examine the two ads in the link above: one for Levis’ and one for Skechers.  Consider the common techniques mentioned on the previous page to arrive at separate consumer portraits for the two ads.  According to the ad, what are the qualities of the Levi man?  What are the qualities of the Skecher man? Write one sentence that provides a portrait of each.

Try to make your statements as specific as you can.  In other words, there are many types of “rich,” “sexy,” “handsome;”  Seek to make your definition clearer, less vague.  The purpose of definition demands specificity.  An orange is a juicy fruit, but so is a watermelon, pear, and pineapple. . .

(2) Then, read the other responses.  Do the definition of the consumer portraits match your own?  Are any more specific than yours?  Respond to at least ONE other post, discussing in what ways their statement is specific/not specific in contrast to your own.

IMPORTANT:  Note the name of your assigned brand above (not Levi or Skechers, which were for this practice discussion) .  This brand will be YOUR topic for the DEFINITION essay instructions that will follow.  When researching for your individual rough draft, you will need to use this assigned topic as applied to the definition essay prompt.
