What similar “necessities” exist in society today that you see as comparable to the purchase of the ornate cabinets that once felt so “psychologically rewarding”? The chapter “Dependence” cites “five unpredictable elements [that ] offer us reasons never to count on either attaining or holding on to our desired position within the hierarchy.” With which of these do you have a personal experience to offer that concurs with de Botton’s “unpredictable elements?”
