Star Wars and Mythic Truth Discussion

Question

Dear students,

This assignment is the culmination of your reading and annotating of the previous four texts: Star Wars: A Myth for Our TimeThe Radicalization of Luke SkywalkerEvery Era Needs Its Myth Cycle and An American Mythology.

I imagine you have a lot of thoughts and questions about some of the ideas you’ve just read. Let’s start processing them together, here!

Part One

Please choose one “golden line” from each text, and copy and paste the line, and then explain why you chose it, and how it helped you understand the ideas from the texts better. A golden line can be something that you are amazed by, or that increases your understanding, that challenges your thinking, or even that you disagree with.

Part One should be four short paragraphs.

Part Two

Go back to the work you did for Module Two: The Function of Myth and look at the various functions of myths that you came up with, and that you learned about. Myths have many purposes in our culture.

Choose three of the purposes/functions of myth from Module Two, and evaluate the Star Wars myth (as written about in the articles you’ve just read — you don’t even have to have seen the movies) through the lens of those purposes/functions.

Part Two should be three short paragraphs.

Part Three

Take a paragraph to draw some conclusions. What do the Star Wars texts articles conclude about the purpose of the Star Wars myth for our time? What “mythic truth” do they tell? What else do you conclude from the work that you did in Parts One – Two, above?

Posting

Post Parts One, Two, and Three.

Responding

  1. For your response, find three peers, whose responses you are intrigued by, and/or whose conclusions you would like to know more about, or talk about.  Try to keep responses roughly even between the various students on the discussion board.
  2. Respond to those three peers within 24 hours after the posting due date. Initial posts and responses are always welcome early. You may turn them in any time after the Module opens, and you have completed 100% of the work.
  3. After initial responses have been made, return to the board, and engage in further dialogue with the students who have responded to your posts.
