Women in Music Discussion
Question
This is a group discussion where we can share our ideas and opinions and learn about what others think. To have a fruitful discussion is to disagree, at least at some level.
For this activity you will make one initial post by Friday, February 4 at 11:59 pm. In this post you will answer the following three questions in separate paragraphs:
- Why have there been so few women composers in history? What reasons can you think of?
- Are there barriers placed on women in music today? This could be in the realm of pop music, classical music, or any other genre. If so, what are they and how do they affect women’s careers?
- Should a music course include works by women even if it means skipping over more highly-regarded works by men? Why or why not? What if this class never mentioned any female composers at all; would you be okay with that?
