Question

Write a thoughtful reading response (2 paragraphs, 200+ words) to Pop Culture for Beginners Chapter 6 – “Music” pgs 137-162

  • As part of your response to the chapter, also consider the following personal perspective questions:
    • Who or what has had the greatest influence on your personal musical tastes?
    • Think about the way a specific song relates to your personal history. Why is this song meaningful to you?
    • Music and culture are often intertwined. What form of culture has the biggest influence on the music you listen to? American Pop Culture? Ethnic or Regional Culture? A particular Subculture?
  1. Write a thought-provoking discussion question for your group about an issue or issues brought up in this reading.
  2. Respond to ALL of the other students in your group (at least once) and be sure to answer their discussion question!

PLEASE NOTE: From here on out, your main post  is due Wednesday night (11:59pm) and your replies are due Friday night (11:59pm).

  • Remember: Canvas will only alert you of the main post deadline and not the deadline for replies on Friday, so you have to set your own reminder!

General Tips for Responses:

  • Think/read/watch critically. Make note of your reactions as you read/watch/listen.
  • Every Response should be a minimum 200+ words. Write as much as you like, but make sure it is at least 2 paragraphs and 200 words.

When you are responding to a written text:

  1. Use the text you are responding to. Quote. Cite (give page #). Interpret and comment on what you cite and what you see.
  2. What does this text want me to understand?
  3. Why might the findings or claims of this text be important to our course?
  4. What do I agree with or find especially interesting?
  5. Where, if anywhere, do I feel like “pushing back” against the text’s argument? Why?
