Week 3 Discussion: British Taxes

Question

FACT: King George III realized quickly that William Pitt had spent a lot of money to win the French and Indian War and his coffers needed to be re-filled. Since taxes were comparatively low in the Americas, Parliament thus began working on a new series of taxes. Though pleased with the British victory, the severity of the British national debt caught colonists completely off guard. Colonists were impressed with the cash and blood that the British Government had put into their colonies, and they thought they were finally on an equal footing with the government in their mother country. Before Parliament started passing their series of taxes, English people here saw themselves not as Americans but as English living in America!

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING 3 QUESTIONS IN ONE MAIN POST USING AT LEAST 200 WORDS.

QUESTION #1: How do you think British colonists evolved from being loyal British citizens to revolutionary rebels?

QUESTION #2: Were any specific acts of Parliament to blame? Why?

QUESTION #3: Which colonial actions were most effective in fighting back?

  • EXAMPLE:  British citizens living in America loved freedom by distance.  Too much time went by to expect the colonists to behave just like British citizens back home.  The Stamp Act was mostly to blame because people really wanted low-cost postage. (Then expand on your reasons until you reach at least 200 words.)

STEP 2: PICK 2 CLASSMATES TO WHOM YOU WILL LEAVE RESPONSE POSTS USING THE SANDWICH FORMAT (EXPLAINED BELOW).  RESPOND TO EACH CLASSMATE WITH A MINIMUM OF 75 WORDS PER RESPONSE.

(AGAIN, each of you are required to make a total of THREE posts…ONE main post at least 200 words long, and TWO additional posts of at least 75 words each responding to two of your classmates.)

  • Remember that the word count for your Main Post must be at least 200 words.
  • Remember that your word count for the responses is at least 75 words per post.  Also, remember the three-part “sandwich” format:
  1. Start with a compliment to the classmate who left the Main Post
  2. Add in some new facts/observations of your own
  3. End with a question or two back to the original classmate
