1.2 Discussion 2 Biology & control of SARS-CoV-2

Question

We are currently in an unprecedented situation with the novel coronavirus. This virus is part of a larger family of coronaviruses that is common in people and other animals. This particular virus, called SARS-CoV-2, gives rise to the disease, COVID-19. “CO” stands for corona and “VI” stands for virus and “D” for disease with 19 indicating the year 2019, in which the outbreak initially occurred in humans. This respiratory disease has many symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath with the most severe illness in older adults and among those with pre-existing health conditions.

A reliable source of information about this pandemic is the Center for Disease Control and Protection (Links to an external site.) (CDC), a branch of our national Department of Health and Human Services with a mission to fight disease and support communities and citizens of America. Locally, go to LA County Department of Health (Links to an external site.)  for COVID-19 updates. Globally, our most reliable source is the World Health Organization (WHO; www.who.int (Links to an external site.)) which leads global health responses. For those who would like to know more about the basics of this coronavirus, you may watch The Coronavirus explained & what you should do (Links to an external site.) (optional).

To participate in this discussion forum,  read the most recent updates on the Omicron variant (Links to an external site.) of this particular coronavirus.

    1. Which 2 issues are most concerning to you about the COVID-19 pandemic? Briefly justify your choices.
      1. relative rapid mutation & evolution of the virus
      2. effectiveness of existing vaccines against the omicron variant
      3. effectiveness of existing anti viral drugs, including monoclonal antibodies agains the omicron variant
      4. some people’s distrust of scientific information
      5. dealing with pandemic burnout & pandemic fatigue
