IMPORTANT – Books – complete before this week’s Zoom check-in session

Question

Hi, please think about the article you read last week on children’s books. We will be talking further about quality children’s literature during our Zoom on Tuesday and Wednesday.

When thinking about children’s literature, we should be thinking about introducing children to books that will help to foster a love of books and stories. So when thinking about books in early childhood classrooms, we should make sure to include:

  • A good, well-written story.
  • Beautiful illustrations
  • Relatable characters that are well-developed.
  • A collection of books that supports an anti-bias/anti-racist environment

We all have books from our childhood that we think of fondly. Instead of instinctively picking books that you loved as a child, I encourage you to think about the qualities listed above, as well as the articles on children’s books from last week. Then, looking through the Los Angeles or Glendale public library’s database on children’s books, the Hoopla or Libby library apps should work well, choose some books that are examples of high-quality children’s literature. These books you can access online via an e-book or you can go to the library. Some strategies you can use: there are some awards that distinguish quality children’s literature:

  •
    • The Newbery Award – for the best children’s books,
    • The Caldecott Award – for the best illustrations,
    • The Horn Book – reviews quality children’s literature
    • The Coretta Scott Kind Award for African American authors depicts the life and culture of African Americans in children’s books.
    • The Pura Belpré Award for Latinx writers and illustrators who celebrate the Latinx culture in children’s books.

BEFORE our Zoom this week (April 5th or 6th), please post at least two children’s books that are examples of quality children’s literature that you’d want to add to an early childhood classroom library. We will talk about the selection and additional books during our Zoom. If you cannot attend the Zoom, please still post books before Wednesday night. I will respond to each of you and ask specific questions about your choices. This will be part of your alternative discussion for next week.
