PART I

After watching the lecture on the use of women’s images and roles in the Civil War and reading The Declaration of Sentiments and Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s address (Links to an external site.) please consider the following question:

 

The Declaration of Sentiments (Links to an external site.) was written before the Civil War in 1848, and Stanton’s speech  (Links to an external site.)was given in the 1890s. Both documents call for a new role and rights for women. Considering that the Civil War deeply impacted women’s roles in the United States and undermined the conditions that triggered Stanton’s frustration in the 1840s, please answer the following question:

  1. What is Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s ultimate vision for women in her address (Stanton Speech)? Do these understandings of womanhood outlined by Stanton mirror or challenge those of True Womanhood(found in the video)?
