Chapter 11 – Discussion: Stress Management

Question

Introduction

Exposure to stress from conception can alter the mental development of a child. Instead of developing a preference for feel good hormones that promote proper development, a child exposed to stress develops a preference for stress hormones such as adrenaline. This preference for stress hormones makes children feel uneasy when they are not stressed. Not surprisingly, these children have a hard time adapting in school. If everything is going well they may act out and create drama in order get the rush adrenaline they need to feel normal. This leads to conflicts in school, behavior issues, and learning problems.

Unaware of what is happening, society in general either blames the child, the parents, or the schools for the child dropping out of school.

What are your thoughts on stress and how it affects children and adults?
