Discussion Circle #9: Chapter 7 & Documentary – Post due Wed 4/13, Replies due Fri 4/15 – The Fab Four
Question
Before Wednesday:
- First, do the required reading of Chapter 7 – “Comics” pgs 165 – 186, and watch the 2014 documentary She Makes Comics, directed by Marisa Stotter.
- This film is available for free on Tubi, It is also available to rent on Prime Video for $2.99, and available through Hoopla for free, if you have a public library card.
- Then, write a response (~200 words or more) to an issue brought up in either the reading or the documentary.
- NOTE: For this response, I’d like you to also include an answer to the “Your Turn” question on page 180, rephrased here: To what extent do you think the faithfulness of an adaptation to its source text — in this case, the comic book being adapted to a film, for example — should be used as a measurement of success?
- Also: I think most of us have seen at least one movie based on a comic book or comic book characters. What is your favorite and why? Have you read any of the comic it was based on? Do you think that reading the original source is even necessary to your full appreciation of the adaptation?
- Finally, after your response, write a thought-provoking discussion question for your group about an issue or issues brought up in our reading or a question connected to the documentary. Remember: choose specific, thoughtful, and answerable questions!
Before Friday:
- Respond to each of the other students in your group (at least once) and answer their discussion question in a thoughtful response post!
