Question

Module 05: Discussion – Defining Religion

Purpose: To practice analyzing a definition of religion according to the criteria for a good definition.

Directions:

Before you write your initial post for this discussion, go to your first journal entry and read the analysis I have done of your own initial definition of religion. You can use that as a model for how you should analyze the definition you look at here and also for how you should analyze your classmates’ definitions. Before you write your initial post for this discussion, read through “How to Define Religion” then go to your first reflection assignment.

Initial post: (due mid-week) Identify and analyze a definition of religion from the list (or any other source):

  1. Copy the definition and cite the source in your initial post (include URL for a webpage)
  2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this definition? Analyze the definition with reference to all the criteria for a good definition of religion:
    • Is this definition too broad or too narrow? Why?
    • Is this definition biased? In what way?
    • Does this definition address both the substance and function of religion? In what ways?
    • Is this definition comprehensive of several dimensions of religion? Which dimensions does it mention?

  3. At the end of your analysis of the dictionary definition, copy your own initial definition from your journal activity #1
