Chapter 12 – Managing Environmental Resources Discussion

Question

Introduction

Whether you believe global warming is real or whether you believe it is a natural phenomenon does not matter. Both scenarios lead to the same outcome. The world is going to get hotter and the polar ice caps are going to melt in our lifetime. As the polar ice caps melt the sea level will rise, weather patterns will change, and there will be significant social and economic change. These changes will alter resources at the individual, family, community, state, region, and national level. On an individual level, billions of dollars of wealth will be lost and made as people migrate inland because of the rising sea level. At a community and national level, cities, states, and nations will have to raise taxes to pay for infrastructure repairs and to address threats from fires, flooding, mud slides, and food and water shortages.

As proactive interdependent individuals, your focus should be on preparing for the changes that will take place.

  1. Describe how you think these changes will impact you.
  2. Describe what you will do to prepare for them.
