Validity of Nutrition Claims – Evaluate a News Article or Claim (Ex. Avocados and Heart Attack)

Question

Can you think of a time where you were told something about nutrition and you didn’t know whether or not it was true?  For example, does milk cause mucus?  Or, should you starve a fever?  Should you avoid ice-cream if you have a cold?

It is crucial that we seek answers to nutrition questions that are grounded in science. Scholarly journals and government websites (such as the Centers for Disease Control and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) can help us to be better consumers of nutrition.  Take a few moments to think about a news article that you just read or a claim that heard recently but not more than 3 years ago.  Now review Chapter 1 which contains information on the scientific method and validity of claims.  Here is what you will need to post here, in your initial post:

  1.  Tell us about a claim or an article that you read about nutrition.  It must be in the last 12 months.
  2.  Describe if the claim or authors work is grounded in the scientific method.
  3.  Tell us whether or not you feel that this finding or claim is accurate or should be followed.
  4. Describe at least one national and global implication.
  5.  Provide the link to the claim or article at the end under the title:  References

Then, respond to at least 2 of your peers.  Share your thoughts, reactions, ask questions, and have fun!

Check this article about mood and food:

Eating 2 servings a week of 1 fatty fruit can reduce heart attack risk, study says

There’s fresh evidence that eating at least two servings of avocado a week reduced the risk of having a heart attack by 21% when compared to avoiding or rarely eating avocados. Do you believe it?  Or not?  Put your research evaluation skills to work.
