Discussion 2: Endocrine Diseases

Question

The endocrine system is composed of numerous organs found around the body. Many of these are derived from epithelial-like tissue, and because of that they often have high regenerative ability. This ability to undergo mitosis also means that they are susceptible to cancers. Beyond that, there are other non-cancerous diseases that affect endocrine organs. Your goal in this discussion board is to learn about the various diseases that affect endocrine organs.

Directions

  1. Skim through any posts that have already been made. Make a note of the diseases that have been covered so far.
  2. Using the internet, find a disease that affects the endocrine system. Please find a unique one that has not been covered yet. We have about 40 people in this class, but there are plenty of diseases to choose from.
  3. Write up a summary of the disease in your own words. This should be in paragraph form (i.e., not bullet points or a list). Make sure to at least cover the following in your writing:
    1. What is the name of your disease. Bold and center this as the title of your post, so that others can quickly tell what you are writing about.
    2. What is the prevalence of the disease in the U.S.?
    3. What is happening to the endocrine organ(s) to cause this disease?
    4. What are the symptoms? If there is a relevant picture or info-graphic, include it with your writing.
    5. How is it diagnosed? If it is diagnosed visually, include a picture.
    6. How is it treated?
  4. Make this initial post by the end of Friday, 4/22 at 11:59pm
  5. By the end of Sunday, 4/24, write a reply to two peers. Consider the following in your reply. You can absolutely write beyond the topics below.
    1. What did you find interesting?
    2. How does this disease relate to content we have covered this far into the course?
    3. Is there anything interesting or related that you can add to your reply?
