Week 15 Discussion Forum

Question

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this week’s content-even if it might make me feel very old… 🙂

This might be a tough one, given your ages, but… what do you remember-if anything-with regard to 9/11? What do  your families/communities remember with regard to 9/11 (and possibly where they were the morning of 9/11)?

Do you think the FBI had the right under the Patriot Act to obtain personal information (including banking records, phone records, computer records) about potential domestic “terrorists” without a judge’s approval? Why or why not? Do you think the FBI had the right to infiltrate religious organizations to determine if a potential terrorist threat was at work? Why or why not?

Since 9/11, surveillance technologies have also expanded in use by local police agencies. For example, consider the following article: https://www.npr.org/2021/01/27/961103187/surveillance-and-local-police-how-technology-is-evolving-faster-than-regulation (Links to an external site.). After perusing the article, do you think these types of surveillance technologies are more utopian or dystopian in nature? That is, what are the pros and/or cons of this technology-and do you support more surveillance?
