Week 7 Discussion – Serving Infants and Toddlers with Special Needs

Question

Introduction:

Although babies grow and develop at different rates, most follow a predictable path and learn to walk, talk, and gain new skills in expected ways. For some young children, however, development unfolds according to a slower timetable or in an atypical fashion. For those infants and toddlers with a disability or developmental delay, intervening early can make all the difference in the world. (Zero to Three, 2009)

Working with infants and toddlers who have developmental delays or special needs can be challenging.  And families of young children with developmental disabilities can be confronted with many challenges.  For our last discussion, we will explore ways to support both children and families when concerns arise. (The video and reading referenced in this discussion are both in the Week 7 Module.)

Prompt:

  1. Share your reactions to the video Carter’s Story.   Some questions to consider are:  What do you think about the parent’s experiences at the hospital?  Can you understand the emotional reactions of the parents?  What were your impressions of the Early Intervention services that the family received?  What did you learn from watching this video?   (Summarize your reactions to the video in two paragraphs. You do not need to answer each question.)
  2. Review the article Talking with Parents when Concerns   Imagine you are the teacher of a toddler who is exhibiting signs of a delay.  How might you decide what information to share with the family?  When and how would you share your observations and concerns?  How do you think you would react if the family dismissed your concerns?
