Discussion 3 – Political Ads

Does political advertising manipulate public opinion about issues and candidates? Is this any different from advertising a consumer product? If political attitudes are the results of manipulation, does this make a mockery of free elections? If citizens’ preferences are not freely chosen, what does this mean for democracy?

Discussion 3 – Political Ads Answer

Political advertising serves the purpose of influencing the people on who to vote, and what platforms they can and have offered. It is in a way manipulative because it only deals with the positive contributions of the candidate, rather than the whole story, which compels him or her to run for candidacy. It is no different from advertising a product. When a product is advertised, it influences the people’s behavior to buy the product using different psychological desires in order to relate to the promoter, or to have the same values that the product offers.
