Discussion 5 – Limits on the President
How is the American president limited or constrained in his powers to act as he pleases? Why must the president resort to the “power of the bully pulpit” to accomplish his goals? What are the formal and informal resources available to the president as he attempts to persuade others to help meet his goals?
Discussion 5 – Limits on the President Answer
The American president is limited in his powers to act on executive powers. This limitation extends from making laws to declaring war, deciding how the federal budget should be spent, interpreting laws, and choosing cabinet members or Supreme Court Justices. All these should have the approval of the Senate first before the president can enact these. Therefore, the limited powers of the president are based on Senate approval, to avoid total control or totalitarian rule.
