Explain what feature differentiates one type of atom from another.

Basically, atoms are made up of the subatomic particles — electrons, neutrons, and protons. What makes one type of atom different from another is the number of neutrons and protons its nucleus contains, and the number of electrons that orbits around it. Practically, we are talking about the atomic number. The higher the atomic number, the more subatomic particles that type of atom has.
