Week 2 Discussion

To continue analyzing and synthesizing (Schlib and Clifford 72) literature, it’s now time for you to enter into a conversation with your fellow literary scholars about the topics raised in the works at the end of Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 4.

Perform a close reading of the following two works at the end of Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 4:

  1. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Eliot (128–132)
  2. “Old Houses” by Allison Alsup (132–134)

Identify how each of these two works of literature relates to one or more of the topics mentioned in the Schlib and Clifford text on pages 124 and 126–128. Which topic(s) might apply to both works? Be sure to defend your position with evidence (i.e., quotes) from the text as Schlib and Clifford have done in their analysis of Hull’s poem (126–128).

Week 2 Discussion

Among the topics discussed this week is the relationship between public and private, the social and the personal. Accordingly, these factors highlight the possibility by which literary selections create connections that are specifically capable of outlining the social picture that was evident during the time when the author was writing either a poem or a story that they hope would send out messages that will surely affect the construction of thinking and understanding of their audience towards certain topics that may be related to interesting issues that they want to present to their target readers.
