Wk 1 Discussion – Research Use

  • What is research as the concept will be used in this class? What is the difference between a quality improvement question, an evidence based practice question and a research question? How will you determine if the question you are writing for the week one assignment is a research question and not an EBP question or a QI question?

  • What is the difference between a research study report, an informational article and a clinical guideline(s) article?

  • Look at the week one assignment. It is asking you to write a research question. What is your draft problem? What is your draft research question (statement or PICO format)?

  • What three clues will you use to tell if a study is qualitative or quantitative in approach?

Wk 1 Discussion – Research Use Answer

Research is a scientific process that aims to validate existing or generate new knowledge that could be useful for future practice (Grove et al., 2015).

A QI question examines existing data to improve processes and outcomes. EBP question examines existing data to appraise the evidence that will be used to answer pressing clinical or administrative questions. To influence nursing practice, systems, and policies, a research question validates and refines existing data or generates new knowledge (Shirley et al., 2011).
