Assignment 3

Define a subculture. What is an example of a subculture? Using your example, how do that group’s views differ from mainstream society? Do they have similarities to the dominant culture?

Talk with someone who is a part of a subculture. Do a mini-interview. There are no set questions, but I want you to think like a sociologist and ask questions about their subculture you think would be relevant. You do not have to submit your questions–just do a summary write up of the experience.

Assignment 3 Answer

Any group that lives within a dominant, mainstream culture is referred to as a subculture. It can be considered as a world encapsulated in another world. These individuals have similar ideologies, aesthetics, and vocabulary. A subculture is defined as a smaller cultural group within a larger culture; individuals of a subculture are part of the broader culture, but they also share a separate identity within a smaller group.
