Wk 2 Discussion – Regulatory Accountability

The regulation of nursing practice is delineated within each state’s nurse practice act. Nurses are responsible for knowing and understanding how their practice is regulated by the state in which they are licensed. A nurse who practices beyond their state’s legal definition of nursing is subject to disciplinary action by the regulatory agency.

  • What should a nurse do if requested to perform a duty that is beyond the scope of practice outlined in the state’s nurse practice act?

Wk 2 Discussion – Regulatory Accountability Answer

A nurse who performs work for which she is not certified could suffer serious professional and financial penalties. One of the provisions of the nursing practice act (NPA) is that nurses must be accountable for providing and improving safe patient care. In addition, the NPA clearly provided the scope of practice that only includes safe nursing functions appropriate for the level of training and orientation (Huynh & Haddad, 2021).
