The Fountain is a well-known work by Duchamp and is broadly regarded as a symbol of 20th-century art. The original, which has since been lost, was a basic urinal that was usually displayed on its back rather than upright for exhibition purposes. The Fountain has been regarded as a definitive example of what he referred to as a “readymade,” an ordinary manufactured object designated as a masterpiece by the artist.
