Read the following September 8, 2018 Washington Post article entitled, Veterans don’t get to decide what ‘respecting the flag’ means Our service doesn’t entitle us to get offended by Kaepernick’s choices or anybody else’s, written by Salil Puri, a staff sergeant with the Army’s Psychological Operations Regiment, served in Afghanistan.

A flag is an essential identity of a nation. It is a symbol of one’s independence. Accordingly, the flag embodies the role and mission of the military or armed forces. The flag is symbolic of what they protect and fight for – freedom. In this score, I do understand the reactions and sentiments of the veterans with respect to the gesture and actuation of Colin Kaepernick when he kneeled during the flag raising and singing of national anthem.

I have to agree with the claims of Salil Puri in the article “Veterans don’t get to decide what ‘respecting the flag’ means.” The flag symbolizes the entirety of the people of a particular territory who exercise sovereignty and from whom all government authority emanates. Getting offended by the kneeling protest of Colin Kaepernick and others amounts to saying that a military person is supreme than any other member of the nation.
